ECVET Skills Platform

European initiative to strengthen vocational training in the CNC sector

Project overview

The Erasmus+ project ECVET Skills Platform aimed to systematically improve dialogue between vocational training institutions and the labour market, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The focus was on developing a digital platform on which labour market-relevant skills can be identified, assessed and translated into specific training content.

Together with project partners from Turkey, Germany, Spain, Norway, Austria and Greece, an innovative, participatory approach was developed that makes training in the profession of CNC machine operator more practical, future-oriented and comparable across Europe.

Challenge and starting point

In many EU countries, there is a gap between the skills young people have acquired after completing their education and the actual requirements of companies. There is a shortage of well-trained skilled workers, particularly in the technical and industrial sectors, such as in the manufacture of machinery, electronics and vehicles. At the same time, many companies have difficulties communicating their qualification needs to the education system.

The project responded to this challenge by developing a digital skills platform that systematically collects feedback from the field and translates it into concrete training measures.

What we have achieved together

As part of the project, the following results were developed and implemented in close cooperation with education and labour market stakeholders from six countries:

►Competence catalogue for CNC specialists

Based on the European Qualifications Framework (EQF, level 4), a comprehensive catalogue has been developed that describes the most important technical, personal and conceptual competencies for CNC machine operators.

►ECVET learning outcome units

The competencies were transferred into standardized learning outcome units, which enable comparison and credit transfer across Europe.

►Digital platform ‘Skills Matching’

With the skillsmatching.eu platform, a user-friendly tool was created that:

  • can be used by companies to assess the required competencies,
  • supports teachers and trainers in planning lessons,
  • and provides guidance on current labor market needs for learners and institutions.and provides guidance on current labor market needs for learners and institutions.

►Modular curriculum for CNC training

Based on the prioritised competencies, a curriculum comprising 10 modules was developed, integrating both technical content and soft skills. The plan was tested and evaluated in pilot phases with trainers.

►Development of practical training content

Multimedia learning materials – such as videos, presentations and practical tasks – were created for the modules. This was supplemented by a Europass certificate, which facilitates recognition throughout Europe.

►Training courses und workshops for teachers

Workshops on the use of the platform and the materials developed were held in all partner countries. A five-day short training course in Dresden provided specialist and methodological knowledge for application in the classroom.

►Dissemination and transfer

project results were widely disseminated and communicated to stakeholders from vocational training, business and politics through focus groups, multiplier events and national events.

A sustainable contribution to vocational education and training in Europe

The ECVET Skills Platform project has demonstrated how digital tools, European cooperation and a shared focus on labour market orientation can improve the quality of vocational education and training. The platform, curricula and materials will remain available after the end of the project and can be reused or transferred to other professions.
